It was a pleasure to judge Deerhounds in a large outdoor ring. We moan about being inside, then we get an outside ring and the weather is beautiful, but too warm for our beloved breed! We are never happy!
I was so thrilled at the quality that came along and the good sportsmanship from everyone. I had two fabulous stewards who were on the ball and ran the ring like clockwork.
Thank you all for the support and trusting me with your fabulous hounds.
Congratulations to my best of breed who was shortlisted in a very strong hound group and also to my best puppy who went on to win PG2.

Puppy Dog (4,1)
1st Taylor – Ormanstar Dark Shadow – BP and Hound Puppy Group 2
Strong male, head of good proportions, dark eyes and well folded ears. Mouth correct. Muscular neck flowing into well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm. Chest deep, ribcage well sprung and carried well back, brisket to fill. Loin short and deep. Well angulated hind quarters with decent width of second thigh. Flat bone and well knuckled feet. Moved well in profile, coming and going. Look forward to watching him mature. Congratulations on HPG 2.
2nd Shannon – Packaway Downlander at Erewhon
Raw young male, head clean and flat, mouth correct, eyes dark and ears with enough fold. Shoulders very upright at the moment and hopefully will settle back into place with better angulation as he matures. Topline off at the moment until his shoulder fall back. Prefer his underline to 1st. Slightly longer in loin. Hindquarters of good width but angulation slightly more upright which will hopefully settle. Movement was good enough to see a few quality strides.
3rd Cummings – Kaleginy Trubador
Junior Dog (1,0)
1st Wilce Quinton & Quinton – Kirjojax Harris
Masculine head with a good dark eye, ears folded well. Strong neck, correct layback of shoulder but prefer slightly more length of upper arm. Clean flat bone with good well knuckled feet. Nice rise over loin with fabulous fall away. Loin strong and deep with a very nice underline. Slightly narrower behind on the move but this is down to maturity. Nice easy movement in profile. Smart male.
Yearling Dog (1,0)
1st Metselaar-Williams & Constantine – Kaleginy Drummond at Grendel
Flat head, prefer a little less stop, dark eyes and well folded ears. Mouth correct. Slightly more upright in shoulder which I hope will fall back into place as he matures. Topline a little too exaggerated for me and underline a little sharp. Rear angulation was much better and hopefully width of second thigh will develop over time. Enough bone. Movement was very close behind and front movement was quite erratic. I think he is just at a very awkward stage of development.
Post Graduate Dog (4,0)
1st Peach – Kilbourne King Alfred - RCC
Very handsome hound. Head has no coarseness and complimented by furnishings, eyes dark, mouth correct. I love the set on from back of skull to neck which was strong and flows into well laid shoulders with a full brisket and a prominent prosternum. Chest deep, ribs well sprung and carried well back with a strong deep loin. Topline and underline spot on with a fabulous croup. Pleasing rear angulation with good bend of stifle. Real powerful but effortless movement in all directions. Pleased to award him RCC today but I am sure he will go on and achieve his title in the near future.
2nd Finnett & Heathcote – Hyndsight Sinnerman
More the type I like personally. Head masculine and of good proportions, not as dark an eye as 1st. Mouth correct and ears well folded. Shoulder of good angulation and set back, hind quarters balanced with shoulders, good width to second thigh and clean flat bone with well knuckled feet. Topline and underline pleasing. I really like the balance of this hound. Movement was straight and powerful but sadly 1st just had the edge today. It was starting to get hot by this point and hounds were feeling it.
3rd Stuart & Holt – Ollandsheart Oberon
Limit Dog (2,1)
1st Taylor – Ormanstar Gabriel Norman
Handsome male with pleasing head. Eyes slightly lighter, ears of good shape and well folded. Quite an elegant set on from skull to neck. Good layback of shoulder but slightly more upright in upper arm. Brisket well filled, chest deep and good long ribbing, loin short, thick and deep. Flowing topline with lovely fall away. Correct angulation behind. Moved really well in all directions with plenty of drive. His handler makes him look effortless.
Open Dog (4,0)
I am sure this class could go either way as we had 4 really smart and masculine hounds and all of a different type. Sadly 1 withdrew after finding a hole in the field and finished unlevel on the move which was a real shame. I have admired all 4 at times and I was really spoiled for choice.
1st Grimshaw – Greyflax Diamond Joe at Jamalison – CC
Strong hound who sports that aquiline head I love. Darkest of eyes. Real stallion crest on his neck which is of correct length. Well angulated shoulders, firm filled brisket and prominent prosternum. Topline and underline spot on, loin deep and short. Good width across his quarters with a wonderful fall away. Prefer him a little deeper in chest, ribbing carried well back. Well angulated hindquarters and a real wide second thigh. Expertly handled, showing off his movement in profile using the whole ring. True coming and going. Real presence on the move. Pleased to award him the CC.
2nd Peach – Kilbourne Shrike
3rd Faircloth & Helps – Beardswood Uther
Really like both of these hounds. Both had masculine heads, correct mouths and dark eyes. Necks of correct lengths and well angulated shoulders, deep chests, filled brisket and long ribbing. Prefer the upper arm of 3rd. Nice to see a class of correct toplines and underlines. Rear angulation on both were super but prefer the width of second thigh on 2nd. There really wasn’t much to fault with either of them. Placings had to be made on movement. Prefer the width behind on 2nd, 3rd being a little closer. 2nd had a little more drive in profile, 3rd was a little lazy perhaps but the temperature was reaching 30oC by this point so I can’t blame him.
Veteran Dog (1,0)
1st Taylor – Hoddingrey Peregrine
Veterans get me every time, I adore them and wish we had more out in the showring.
8.5yo. Quality head with eyes that melt your heart. Full set of teeth which were cleaner than some of the younger males. Shoulders and rear well angulated and balanced. Chest deep, ribbing carried well back, loin a little weaker with age. Topline a little softer with age also. He really felt the heat, but he really did try his heart out and moved around the ring with grace and dignity, real nice old man!
Special Beginners Dog (2,0)
1st Taylor – Hoddingrey Peregrine
2nd Thom – Flaxside A Will To Love
Head masculine and of correct proportions, good mouth and neat ears. Correctly angulated shoulders and rear however he looks like a bit of a rascal to handle. He doesn’t help his handler in any way. Topline on the move is good but on the stack he forces his head up and sinks his topline and slides backwards. Chest is deep and ribbing well back. Enough bone. Well knuckled feet. It will be nice to see him settle in the future. Felt really sorry for his handler as I could see she was really trying hard with him but he is only young.

Junior Bitch (3,1)
1st Wilce Quinton & Quinton – Kirjojax Pancho
2nd Havercroft – Kilbourne Lyrae at Dragonsisle
Both very different girls. 1st being slightly more mature at the moment. Prefer the width of head on 1st and the length of head on 2nd. Both lovely dark eyes, good shape and well folded ears. Mouths spot on. Slightly more elegant neck on 2nd, set on from skull to neck on both are lovely. Shoulders on 1st are well set back and slightly more upright in layback on 2nd due to stage of development. I personally prefer the topline of 1st but both are correct. Good flat bone on both, great feet! Both have roomy chests which need to drop on both as they grow. Shorter loin on 1st then 2nd but 2nd is a slightly rangier bitch and 1st more compact. Prefer the width of second thigh on 2nd. Both have fabulous croups and well angulated behind. Two really nice young girls at different stages, look forward to following their careers which I am sure will be successful. Both handled beautifully.
Yearling Bitch (2,0)
1st Taylor – Proud Celtic Queen D’escalgrain for Ormanstar
One of these long, elegant heads I just love. Dark eye, good mouth and well folded ears. Good length of neck with an elegant set on. Nicely laid shoulders with great length of upper arm. Brisket filling well, chest deep and good length of ribbing, loin short and deep. Underline and topline both spot on, on the move. Well angulated rear, prefer a slightly wider second thigh. Moved well in all directions and is effortless in profile. Handled to perfection.
2nd Thom – Tiobraid Lady Morrigan TAF
Pleasing head with probably the darkest eye of the day. Nice length of neck, well angulated shoulders. Good width throughout. Well angulated hindquarters with good width to second thigh. Ribbing long, loin strong. Topline a little exaggerated for me when stacked but settled more on move. Well handled as she looks a little tricky!
Post Graduate Bitch (7,0)
1st Peach – Fine Art Von Der Oelmuhle at Kilbourne - RCC
Beautiful breed type. Head of good proportions and balance. Well laid shoulders of good angulation. Well filled brisket, long ribbing, strong loin. Well angulated rear with good fall away. The width of second thigh here is what I am talking about, fabulous! Topline and underline spot on. Moved in all directions with balance and drive. Produced to perfection.
2nd Spence – Shagiead Stormyseas AI
Nice type but prefer the topline and underline of 1st. Feminine head, good length of foreface, dark eyes and prefer her ears to 1st. Neck strong, shoulders well set, chest deep, prefer the loin length of 1st. Well angulated rear, but prefer the fall away and second thigh of 1st. A little weak on the move going away for me. Plenty of bone.
3rd Shannon – Erewhon Firefly
Limit Bitch (2,0)
1st Wilce Quinton & Quinton – Kilbourne Louisa Chick to Kirjojax
2nd Llewellyn – Kilbourne Mistress Martha at Matahari
Both slightly more working type. Prefer the head on 1st as 2nd has a little too much stop. Mouths good and ears well folded. Layback of shoulder on 1st is quite far forward making her slightly stuffy in neck, but her return of upper arm is good. 2nd shoulders are a little upright all through but a better length of neck. Chest deep and roomy on 1st. 2nd is slightly narrower all through. Prefer the topline of 1st. Rears on both girls are good and well angulated both with good width of second thigh. Both moved well and with drive but slightly close behind.
Open Bitch (4,1)
This was a strong class and I really think all 3 could take top honours. I have admired them all at times and would happily have any of them here in our own kennel.
1st Finnett & Heathcote – Ch Hyndsight How You Remind Me (AI) – CC & BoB
The balance of this bitch is beautiful. Her head is feminine, correct and of good proportions. Well folded ears. Shoulder placement is spot on and well angulated. Chest deep, long and well sprung. Loin is strong and short. Well angulated hind quarters with that fabulous width of second thigh. Topline and underline textbook. Plenty of bone. Moved straight, correct and with good reach and drive. Not over done in anyway. I was pleased to award her CC & BoB and pleased to see her shortlisted in a strong group.
2nd Grimshaw – Greyflax Ruby at Jamalison
Another exciting bitch. Balanced head, dark eyes, good mouth and well folded ears. Her set on from skull to neck is slightly more elegant than 1st. Shoulders well angulated. Chest deep and roomy. Brisket full. Hindquarters balanced and strong with good width. Moved well in all directions but sadly just out moved by 1st. Presented and handled beautifully.
3rd Constantine – Kaleginy Antheia TAF
Good head and eye shape, ears well folded. Neck elegant and strong. Shoulders well laid and of good angulation. Chest deep, loin strong and deep. Well angulation behind but prefer the width of second thigh on 1st and 2nd. Moved quite well but a little close behind. Handled and presented very well.
Veteran Bitch – No Entries
Special Beginners Bitch (1,0)
1st Thom – Flaxside Against All Odds
A slightly shy bitch, but with lockdown some may need a little more time to blossom. Smart head with dark eye and well folded ear. Neck strong and shoulder still need to fall back into place, but that will hopefully come as she matures. Topline good. Well angulated quarters with good fall away. Her rear movement was pleasing and moved well in profile. Handled well.
